Early Years (Reception)

In Reception we follow The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum. Play, your child's interests and independent learning is at the heart of the curriculum, and your child’s day will include large parts of self-initiated time, where they will select activities and learning from our carefully set up indoor and outdoor environments. Adults will be carefully placed to question and support your child in their learning.  

The EYFS is split into 7 areas of learning. These are:
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
  • Communication and Language.
  • Physical Development.
  • Literacy.
  • Mathematics.
  • Understanding the World.
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

The areas of learning in blue are known as the Prime areas of learning and the areas of learning in red are known as the Specific areas of learning. Children need a firm foundation in the Prime areas in order to be able to achieve well in the Specific areas of learning. Alongside the areas of learning are ‘The Characteristics of Effective Learning’. These are split into: Playing and exploring; Active learning and Creating and thinking critically. This thinks about the type of learner your child might be and allows them to engage in their environment as well as underpinning their learning and development across all areas of learning. It supports your child to become an effective and motivated learner.

Outside the Reception classroom is a Parent’s/Carer’s board, which is updated weekly/daily about what the children are learning in class, how you can support them at home and any other important information, such as dates.

How can I help at home?

  • Read with your child for 10 minutes every day.
  • Practise basic maths skills (please see mid-term planning).
  • Look for print, letters and numbers around you and talk about what you see when you’re out and about.
  • Encourage your child to do as much as they can independently.
